Driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is an experience of its own; patches of agility, long intervals of boredom, maybe a fun road trip. Add some art to the list and voila! The E11 Highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is now the world’s first and only radio guided highway.

Don’t get it? Check out this Instagram video posted by The Louvre Abu Dhabi:

“We thought that for this month of innovation we are going to do something pioneering,” says Saif Ghobash, the Director General Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT). “We decided to launch the first-ever – in the world – roadside gallery. The concept is: you’re on the highway for about an hour and a half and we have a lot of art here, and so we brought the art to you on the road. You can see a piece and listen to a nicely curated explanation of it. It’s entertaining and educating for the driver, and for the children if they’re in the car.”

While the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a tourist attraction, the roadside gallery is an initiative to increase awareness of arts and culture among the local audiences and attract more residents towards the museum. Since the highway (E11) is used mostly by residents, this is a great opportunity to experience artwork like never before.

Marking the month of innovation, the highway gallery aims not only to impress, but also to educate and spans through about ten masterpieces from the Louvre Abu Dhabi which have been resized to billboards. Each billboard, placed at 10km intervals have been paired with a personalised blurbs written by curators at the Museum and you can tune into select radio stations to experience art come to life: Radio 1 FM (100.5 FM), Classic FM (91.6 FM) or Emarat FM (95.8 FM).

Running till the mid of March, the roadside gallery will surely make your ride between the Emirates a little more special, educational and artistic.
