Winter vacation must have started for everyone and as part of your holiday tradition, you might be planning a road trip. However, long hours on the road can be inevitably taxing on children and as a result, on parents too. While there’s no perfect mantra to combating this, we’ve got a few essential tips that could make your trips exciting, interesting and insightful!

  • Start by playing any of these popular car games
    • Trivia Games – Games like ‘21 questions’ or ‘Guess the famous Historian’ could be fun for engaging in conversation with your children or just teaching them about general trivia without making it monotonous or seem like ‘homework’
    • The celebrity game – This game starts with one person mentioning a celebrity. The next person then has to come up with another celebrity whose first name begins with first letter of the previous character’s last name.
    • Tic Tac Toe

  • In-car movie players – Almost every car today has screens on the passenger seats for in-car entertainment. You could download animated movies from Netflix onto your phone and connect it to the infotainment system via USB or Bluetooth and relax while your children enjoy!
    • Movies to consider: Frozen, Wreck it Ralph, any of the Pixar movies!

  • Animal Spotting – The UAE is home to a variety of wildlife – research the journey route you’d be taking so as to know where to look for exciting sights when you’re on your way!

  • Make a travel binder – Organize, organize, organize! Design a travel binder with coloring pages, fill-in stories and color supplies for your kids – this always comes in handy and will keep them busy for a while before they can move on to the next activity or decide to nap.
  • Carry lots of treats! Dealing with ‘hangry’ kids is a lot worse than dealing with hangry adults. Do plan out a meal or two before heading out on the road trip to avoid any last minute hassles.

  • Carry blankets/throws to ensure they’re comfortable – Sleepy and uncomfortable children are cranky children. Always make sure that you have pillows and throws so that your children can sleep peacefully during long trips.
