A trip to UAE is incomplete without visiting Northern Emirates. Northern Emirates constitute the ‘less urban, more nature’ aspect of UAE. A true explorer will love the mountains, deserts and wildlife of Northern Emirates. This is why we want you to visit the oldest mosque in UAE, Al Bidiya Mosque in Fujairah.
Directions to the oldest mosque in UAE
Al Bidiya Mosque (also spelled as Al Bidayah or Al Badiyah) is located in outskirts of Fujairah City. There are multiple routes to visit this mosque but we recommend this one:
Take the E44 – S116 – E84 route to Fujairah. This route will take you across desert areas of outer Sharjah (where you can see camel trains!). This is a longer route than, say taking the Fujairah Kalba Road but it’s so much more fun! Once you get closer to Kalba you will drive across the mountain ranges. The roads are in excellent condition so all types of cars can drive there. The best time to leave Dubai is 3pm, arriving there by 5pm. This way you get the best natural light for photography.
Things to Do in Al Bidiya Mosque
The mosque is actually functional during prayer times. So it is possible to go inside and explore the interior. According to archaeologists, this mosque dates back to 1446 AD. What is particularly interesting are the two mountain outposts just above the mosque:
Both outposts are constructed on right and left side of the mosque. Both outposts are also constructed on top most mounds of the mountain. It is possible to go up to the outposts using steps created for people to go up to the top. If you go inside the outposts, there are staircases to the top. From there you can essentially see the entire locality. So it seems the place was also used as a protection area to look out for potential raiders.
Some Dos and Don’ts
The mosque is a great place for nature and history lovers. It’s best to leave by early evening as smaller roads tend to have low lighting. Also, please check the weather forecast before you go. Heavy rainfall can cause flooding in wadis and authorities close major tourist spots. If you plan to stick around in Fujairah for a longer duration, check out some more historical sites of Fujairah. Have fun!
Wonderful information. Sheikh Zaid Mosque is also one of the great to visit.
